Time Management In the Workplace

Brief Intro/Description

What is the importance of time management in the workplace anyway? Well, if you've worked any job for any amount of time, it seems as if you are always expected to do more with less - meaning more work with less of a pay increase; more hours with less personal time; or put up with more crap, because everyone is cranky for the previous reasons mentioned.

Time Management In The Workplace

Time Management Techniques and Tools

It's so easy to read a list of time management tips and techniques such as prioritize your work, don't waste time, understand your job expectations, do the important stuff first, and on and on.

Let's Get Real

Most people nowadays have something in their job description such as this: and all other duties as assigned. Yep, it's the dreaded "catch- all" that means your boss can give you whatever and you better be able to get it done.

Even more challenging, your work can change based on what blows up that day, or if someone calls off, etc...How about the folks who go on vacation and are then expected to get everything caught up with little or no pay for extra hours? See what I mean? In the real world, time management in the workplace isn't always as easy as reading a few tips and techniques.

The Best Un-Kept Time Management Secret Most People Don't Use

Here's your first major time management tip: Understand the Pareto Principle, better known as the 80/20 rule. Why? Because most of your results come from 20% of your efforts.

The 80/20 rule serves as a reminder that the relationship between inputs and outputs is not created equal. This is great news for you. See..... most people work their butts off at work and don't achieve the expected outcome. Too bad, so sad, because I can tell you a boss and your company don't need a bunch of inefficient people who work hard. They need efficient people who work smart.

By understanding the 80/20 rule you can learn to spend your 20% of the time to your best advantage. I do this all of the time - running rings around my peers who work so hard and get very little done. However, before you can take advantage of your 20%, you have to perform the next time management technique - so read on.

Start With This Time Management Exercise

Time Management Technique: Now that you know the concept of the 80/20 rule, spend a week writing down how you spend your time each day. Yeah, it'll be a pain in the butt, but everything matters. I also want you to take note when your energy seems the highest.

For example, I'm a morning person. I'm most productive fresh off a good nights sleep. What about you?

Now when you take a little extra time to do this exercise, you'll be surprised to see how you really spend your time. For instance, I see people in my workplace spending time surfing the Internet at least 5 times per day (five to ten minutes here and there really add up).

Now that you boosting your time management skills, let's delve into the effective time management technique of the 80/20 rule. Click on this effective time management link.

Paid Attention to the Little Things

Then, there's the mental and emotional interruptions throughout the day. What are these? There are the instances when something or someone pisses you off or you become "concerned" with something going on around you. You stop working, you may brood, fester, or seethe. These are time wasters as well. There are more than you realize.

Knowledge is power and the more you can learn about how you spend time in your day, you become better equipped to do something about it. It's time to make time management in the workplace work for you.

Many Times The Nice Guy Does Finish Last

One more time management tip: Are you too much of a nice person? Meaning do you always help others, always answer other people's question, and get stuck helping them with their workloads, because they can't do it. Now I'm not suggesting that you turn into a uncooperative, non team player. I'm simply saying that you need to start assessing the situation.

Always Consider What's In It For You

Yes, it sound selfish, but you can't simply be a "yes" person or the always "team player." There are times when this backfires on you. However, you can take advantage of the powerful 'learn to say no effectively' time management tip..

I sincerely hope that this information helps support the start of your time management in the workplace. I'll be keeping it real so keep checking back for great tips and techniques for learning time management skills.
